Rupture process of the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake.

چکیده
The 26 December 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake initiated slowly, with small slip and a slow rupture speed for the first 40 to 60 seconds. Then the rupture expanded at a speed of about 2.5 kilometers per second toward the north northwest, extending 1200 to 1300 kilometers along the Andaman trough. Peak displacements reached approximately 15 meters along a 600-kilometer segment of the plate boundary offshore of northwestern Sumatra and the southern Nicobar islands. Slip was less in the northern 400 to 500 kilometers of the aftershock zone, and at least some slip in that region may have occurred on a time scale beyond the seismic band.

Seismological Aspects of the December 2004 Great Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake
The 2004 Great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake had an average source duration of about 500 sec. and a rupture length of 1 ,200–1,300 km. The seismic moment, M0, determined with a finite source model, was 6.5 1022 N-m, which corresponds to Mw=9.18. Allowing for the uncertainties in the current M0 determinations, Mw is in the range of 9.1 to 9.3. The tsunami magnitude Mt is 9.1, suggesting that the ov...
متن کاملStructural context of the great Sumatra-Andaman Islands earthquake
[1] A new three-dimensional seismic model and relocated regional seismicity are used to illuminate the great Sumatra-Andaman Islands earthquake of December 26, 2004. The earthquake initiated where the incoming Indian Plate lithosphere is warmest and the dip of the WadatiBenioff zone is least steep along the subduction zone extending from the Andaman Trench to the Java Trench. Anomalously high t...

Studies on tiny and huge seismic sources using long period surface waves: From the hum to 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake. Abstract Studies on tiny and huge seismic sources using long period surface waves: From the hum to 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake. We study the source processes of two extreme cases, the hum of the Earth and the 2004 great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake, by using long period s...
متن کاملDetection of Ruptures of Andaman Fault Segments in the 2004 Great Sumatra Earthquake with Coseismic Ionospheric Disturbances
Near field coseismic perturbations of ionospheric total electron content (TEC), caused by direct acoustic waves from focal regions, can be observed with Global Positioning System (GPS). They appear 10-15 minutes after the earthquake with typical periods of ~4-5 minutes, and propagate as fast as ~1 km/s toward directions allowed by ambient geomagnetic fields. Ionospheric disturbance, associated ...
متن کاملRupture Properties of the Giant Sumatra Earthquake Imaged by Empirical Green’s Function Analysis
Empirical green’s function (EGF) analysis has remained little used to image the rupture properties of the giant 26 December 2004 Sumatra earthquake. The 2 November 2002 foreshock (Mw 7.2), close to the mainshock epicenter, gives us the opportunity to use its waveforms to empirically simulate the Rayleigh-wave propagation of the Sumatra earthquake. We first show that the exceptional size of the ...
